The session provides a gentle opportunity to be playful with others using games, play, movement and improvisation.  People really enjoy reconnecting with their playful, spontaneous, imaginative selves and often surprise themselves by how much value they get from it. Past participants describe the sense of freedom, joy and the deep quality of connection with others that they experience following a playshop. They also describe experiencing themselves differently  surprising themselves with new openness, energy and insight. Think of it as a holiday from your head!

Kaisa Kokko:  ‘Silence is Golden’

Friday 11th November @ 10am (Hall Space)

3 hour workshop

Level of experience: Intermediate/some improv experience

SOLD OUT!

Most of the time we use too much words when improvising. This work shop concentrates on creating and maintaining a deep and meaningful relationship between improvisers mostly without verbal connection. We will work on the intention over words and examine how this will affect our work and in addition give the audience the chance to be active members of storytelling. The more you give the more you get and by devoting to this work you will get a feel of how and why to use less words.  In the work shop we use exercises to try out different approaches in verbally silent work on stage.  We will use our physicality, facial expressions, body language and music to inspire us in the work.

Monica Anastase:  ‘Improv Is Like Quantum Physics’

Friday 11th November @ 2pm (Theatre)

3 hour workshop

Level of experience: All Levels

SOLD OUT!

In quantum physics, a particle exists in all states until it is observed – it can be the same with improvisation. When you are fully immersed in the present moment, listening to your partner with all your senses, the mere fact of your “observing” what is going on advances the situation, instantly collapsing all other options and making the scene entirely truthful.
In this workshop you will learn to “work” less and “be” more, indulge in large amounts of curiosity, and take big exhilarating risks. We will go from group exercises, to group stories, to two and three person scenes, with a dynamic pace throughout.

.

Bart Van Loon:  ‘What Improvisers can learn from BDSM’

Friday 11th November @ 2pm (Hall Space)

3 hour workshop

Level of experience: Intermediate/advanced

SOLD OUT!

In this workshop, we draw parallels between the relationship of actors in an improv scene and partners in an SM relationship. It has nothing to do with sex or intimacy on stage. The key point is that we all need to serve our partners in order to get truly great improv.

.

Kevin Mullaney:  ‘Behaviour is a Game’

Saturday 12th November @ 10am (Theatre)

3 hour workshop

Level of experience: All Levels

SOLD OUT!

Some of the most fun games to play in a scene come from the emotional interplay of the characters. One players behavior inspires an impulsive response in their partner. Patterns of behavior emerge and help form behavior-based games. Justifications bubble up from your unconscious to make sense of whats happening which leads to more ideas of how to play the game.  Surprise Yourself – In this workshop, we will explore adding a little chaos into your scenes on purpose. Change the subject, state your opinion emphatically before you know what it is, make up a long story in the middle of a scene, over react to mundane things, exit or enter a scene without a reason. If these things sound like a bad idea, this workshop is for you. Real life situations are messy and unpredictable, so maybe, just maybe, your scenes should be as well.

.

Robert Long:  ‘Associative Thinking’

Saturday 12th November @ 10am (Hall Space)

3 hour workshop

Level of experience: All Levels

SOLD OUT!

If This, Then What? Youve created a premise for your scene youve found the game, identified the pattern Then what? By working through the techniques of associative thinking, youll loosen your mental filter and embrace the techniques of heightening and developing the worlds you’ve created.

Saturday 12th November @ 2pm (Theatre)

3 hour workshop

Level of experience: All Levels/No Experience Needed

SOLD OUT!

No previous improv or puppetry experience required; puppets will be provided.  Puppets are friendly and cute not to mention great characters in an improv scene. In this class, youll get a crash course in puppetry, then turn right around and apply what youve learned to games and scenes with your new puppet friends!

.

Kevin Mullaney:  ‘Monoscenes’

Saturday 12th November @ 2pm (Hall Space)

3 hour workshop

Level of experience: Intermediate/advanced

SOLD OUT!

An introduction to the long form called a monoscene. A monoscene is not simply one long scene. Instead it’s a series of French scenes all in the same space and over a single stretch of time. Like an act from a Chekhov play, the only edits are when a character enters or exits. Each French scene has it’s own dynamic, it’s own focus and it’s own game. Characters return in different combinations.

Sorry if you’ve missed any of our SOLD OUT! workshops.  The festival does not take online waiting lists for workshops, but we suggest keeping an eye on twitter (@improvfestirl) or on our Facebook Page.

We will try to share posts if anyone can’t make it and needs to sell on their workshop spot.
