"sincere & Ridiculous"
emily murphy
Saturday 16th November: 10:30am - 1:30pm
THIS WORKSHOP IS SOLD OUT!
Silliness and sincerity can appear to be at opposite ends of the improv spectrum. We may be more comfortable with one than the other, but what happens if we combine them in one show, or even one scene? Can we add a sprinkle of mischief to a serious moment, or find the depth in something silly, without killing the scene? Can heartfelt emotion and joyful stupidity ever co-exist, and actually even complement one another? It's absolutely possible!
In this workshop, Emily will guide participants to experiment with earnestness and foolishness, discovering what happens when they collide. Participants will gain confidence playing with tone, resulting in richer, more surprising, scenes.
"Emily is thoughtful, funny and caring. I would recommend taking her classes if you want to get silly, broaden your scope of character moves as well as reflect on your practice” - Rita.
About Emily Murphy
Emily (UK) is an improviser and teacher from Hertfordshire, where she lives with her young family and runs State of Play Improv. She trained in devised theatre at the Royal School of Speech and Drama and has studied improv at iO Chicago, and with leading practitioners from all over the world.
She teaches independently and for Hoopla, London’s biggest improv school, and performs in a duo with Jennifer Jordan. Emily is a founding member of Unmade Theatre Co, with her longtime collaborator, Chris Mead, with whom she is also in a new ensemble dedicated to dramatic improv. With Chris, she has created ambitious improvised theatre that interweaves relationship-driven scenes with physical storytelling.
Emily is known for her bold emotional choices and distinctive characters. She loves improv that feels like a playground of genuine possibility: where sincere, grounded scenes meet joyful stupidity and the results could be funny, weird, beautiful or even all three.
